The Minister for Finance Brian Cowen has proposed a major reform of motor tax in his Budget day speech.

A new labelling system is to be brought in for cars to show their carbon emission levels. A rating system is also to be introduced to encourage people to drive cleaner cars, by reducing the VRT payable on lower-emission cars.

A public consultation is to be carried out on the issue, and Brian Cowen said he hopes the changes will be introduced by January 1, 2008.
