Laois 2-19 Wicklow 0-8
Laois were today crowned NHL Division Two champions for only the second time this century thanks to a convincing 17-point win against Wicklow at Semple Stadium.
Freetaker James Young was firmly on song for the O'Moore's with nine points as the O'Moore's avenged their earlier round League defeat to the Garden County.
The victors led by 0-11 to 0-4 at the interval with the first Wicklow score coming after 6 minutes from a Jonathan O'Neill free.
Wicklow were more eager after the break but two second-half goals from John Brophy and Noel Costelloe ensured Laois were comfortable victors.
Laois centre-half forward James Young was top scorer in the game with 10 points and he got his side off to a great start with the first point of the contest after 20 seconds.
This showed just how serious Laois were about this game and they continued their good work in the remainder of the half despite Wicklow taking their opening score from O’Neill.
Wicklow relied on placed ball scores from O’Neill during that first half and there were just two minutes left before half-time when they got their first score from play, a beautiful Don Hyland point.
Laois were in cruise control at this stage thanks to good scores from Young, Willie Hyland and Joe Phelan in attack though they also worked well defensively with centre-half back Matthew Whelan particularly rock solid.
Although Wicklow upped the anti in the second half, it was Laois who took early scorers from Hyland and Young.
Substitute Alan Tiernan proved to be a vital cog in the mini Wicklow resurgence with two good points in the second half but once John Brophy ensured Laois found the net for the first time in the 48th minute and Noel Costelloe followed this up with a second goal in the depths of injury time to ensure a decisive victory.
After the game Laois captain Joe Fitzpatrick accepted the cup from GAA president Nickey Brennan.
Laois manager Damien Fox was delighted with the win.
“We came here today looking for silverware and that was what we achieved”, said Fox.
“It was important that we kept going in this game and the two goals from John (Brophy) and Noel (Costelloe) were great scores and thankfully we won in the end.”
