Meehan Crystal-clear about Oaks chance

Brian Meehan has dismissed suggestions that it is asking the impossible for a filly to follow up a maiden-race victory by landing a Classic as he prepares Crystal for Friday’s Vodafone Oaks.

Crystal was one of seven left in the Group One contest after today’s final declaration stage in a field headed by Godolphin’s leading fancies Punctilious and Sundrop.

Ballydoyle handler Aidan O’Brien will be triple-handed with All Too Beautiful, Kisses For Me and Necklace, while Ed Dunlop’s Ouija Board completes the field.

Meehan’s charge has had only three career outings and was last seen impressively landing a maiden race at Windsor.

The Upper Lambourn handler, who sent out Bad As I Wannabe to win at Windsor before landing the Group One Prix Morny at Deauville, is looking forward to a big run from Michael Hills’ mount.

He said: “There may be only seven runners, but the quality fillies are still in the race.

“She’s doing really well and I’m pleased with her and although I’m sure a lot of great judges will say it is impossible to go from a maiden and win a Classic, I’ve experienced something close to that before.”

Meehan revealed that Crystal suffered a setback after her Windsor triumph, adding: “She had a slight chest infection and it wouldn’t have been right to have run her in one of the trials, even though it cleared up very quickly.

“Plus, I wanted her to go into Epsom with two runs (this season) under her belt rather than three.”

A serious threat to all is Ouija Board, who trainer Ed Dunlop feels has “a good chance” of carrying the famous silks of Lord Derby to victory.

It has been quite a year for horses with aristocratic connections, with Attraction and Bachelor Duke between them scooping three Classics in the colours of the Duke Of Roxburghe and the late Duke Of Devonshire.

It would be fitting if Ouija Board triumphed in the oldest existing colours, the famous black jacket and white cap.

Dunlop’s daughter of Cape Cross scored in the RL Davison Pretty Polly stakes on her most recent outing and is a best priced 4-1 for Friday’s contest.

“She’s fine. She had her final blow-out and worked well this morning. We’ve got her there and the race will be run on decent ground, which will suit,” said Dunlop.

“It’s incredible that only four trainers are taking each other on for a Classic, but I’m not complaining and my filly has a good chance.”

Clive Brittain’s Menhoubah, however, will miss the mile-and-a-half contest, as will John Dunlop’s Hathrah and O’Brien’s Baraka.

Menhoubah, the recent winner of the Italian Oaks, is likely to head to France for her next start.

Brittain said: “Menhoubah will probably go for the French Oaks. She’s come out of her last run really well and is a filly on the upward curve, but by waiting for Chantilly it gives her that little bit more time.”

Hathrah was last seen finishing third to Attraction in the UltimateBet.com 1000 Guineas, and explaining her absence from the Group One contest, Hamdan’s Al Maktoum’s racing manager Angus Gold said: “She was a little bit quiet last week and wasn’t at her very, very best.

“We have taken the view that she needs to be at her best to win an Oaks and while she worked well yesterday, we just thought we would give her a little more time.

“We have the option of the Prix de Diane Hermes – the French Oaks – or the Ribblesdale at Ascot, and she is still in the Coronation.”

Of the daughter of Linamix, Gold added: “She is bred to get further than a mile and I am certain that is what she wants.”

As expected, Frankie Dettori will ride the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes winner Punctilious, leaving Kerrin McEvoy to continue his partnership with Sundrop following their second placing in the 1000 Guineas.

Dettori’s mount is as short as 7-4 with William Hill and the Italian told Racing UK: “Punctilious is a nice filly and she stays well. She is a very bad work horse, but is totally different on the track.”

Commenting on Dettori’s choice, totesport’s Paul Petrie said: “For favourite, read Frankie. Now that he has decided which horse he will be riding we can expect a mad rush as punters clamber to back their man.”

Jamie Spencer has elected to ride All Too Beautiful for his employers, which leaves the way clear for Johnny Murtagh to partner Necklace, while Paul Scallan will be aboard Kisses For Me.

All Too Beautiful is unbeaten in two starts and the daughter of Sadler’s Wells took a Listed event over 10 furlongs last time out.

Kisses For Me has failed to cut any ice since winning on her debut last October while Necklace, who flopped in the 1000 Guineas, put up a better showing in the Irish equivalent when finishing sixth, six lengths behind Attraction.
