The jacket for 'The Lost Symbol', Dan Brown’s long-awaited follow-up to 'The Da Vinci Code', was released today, teasing fans with clues to the setting and themes of the book.

The cover shows a key surrounded by flames and bearing a Freemasonry symbol above Washington’s Capitol Hill, suggesting the action will unfold in America’s seat of power.

The thriller, which will again feature Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon, will be published on September 15.

It will have a global English language first print run of 6.5 million copies - the largest first print in the history of publisher Random House worldwide.

Brown was previously quoted by the BBC describing writing the new novel, which was originally expected to be released in 2006, as “a strange and wonderful journey”.

Conspiracy theory novel 'The Da Vinci Code' was released in 2003 and became an international bestseller with 81 million copies in print worldwide.

The book saw Langdon investigate a murder in The Louvre museum in Paris, and it was turned into a blockbuster starring Tom Hanks.

Following the publication of 'The Da Vinci Code', Brown’s earlier novels 'Angels and Demons', which was again turned into a movie starring Hanks, 'Deception Point' and 'Digital Fortress' have all gone on to become multimillion-copy international bestsellers.

A giant version of the new cover was unveiled at Waterstone’s in London’s Piccadilly today.
