A 26-year-old man was due in court in Britain today accused of deliberately infecting women with the HIV virus, police said.

The man was appearing before magistrates charged with three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The man, a musician from Malawi who has lived in the Middlesbrough area for some time, also faces a further charge of unlawful sexual intercourse.

The alleged offences cover a three-year period and relate to a 15-year-old Middlesbrough girl, a 25-year-old woman from Italy, and a 26-year-old woman from Kenya.

It is alleged all three discovered they had been infected with the HIV virus after having sex with the man.

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said it was the first case of its kind in the North of England and only the second in the country.
