A sectarian gang has been blamed for damaging more than 20 cars in a nationalist area of Co Armagh in Northern Ireland today.
SDLP councillor Delores Kelly said there was “no doubt” that loyalists had attacked the vehicles in early this morning in north Lurgan.
She said many of the cars had Armagh Gaelic Athletic Association All-Ireland Football Championship winning stickers in the window and were parked outside homes adorned with Armagh flags.
The county won the prestigious title in Croke Park last Sunday and Ms Kelly said the incident appeared to be connected to the celebrations which had been ongoing in the area since.
“There are some very bitter and twisted people about,” she said.
“I have no doubt but that this must have been a planned attack by loyalists. One or more gangs has gone on the rampage and wrecked cars on the Lough Road and Victoria Street and Republican murals in the Kilwilkee Estate have been paint bombed.
“It’s just very sad that people have to wake up to this on a Sunday morning. Many are upset and others are frightened, they just do not know what to expect next.”
A police spokesman said officers were investigating criminal damage caused to a number of vehicles.
“No motive for the attacks has yet been established,” he added.
