Gold Cup runner-up Distinction remains on course for the Emirates Melbourne Cup on November 1 despite disappointing in the GNER Doncaster Cup on Thursday.
Sir Michael Stoute’s six-year-old could only finish sixth in the stayers’ race on Town Moor despite being sent off the well-backed 5-4 favourite.
However, Harry Herbert, racing manager for owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, pointed to the ground for Distinction’s reverse and reports him to still be an intended runner in Australia.
“The ground was quite loose with the rain having not got in properly and he couldn’t go on it,” said Herbert.
“As long as Sir Michael is pleased with him, Melbourne is still very much the plan and we are hoping for the usual weather down there – which means the track will be pretty quick and that is what he loves.”
