Gardaí describe Dublin shooting that left victim in serious condition as 'clumsy'

Update - 9.15am: Gardaí have said it was fortunate no one was killed in a “rough and ready” gun attack at a scrapyard in Dublin, according to Cormac O'Keeffe of the Irish Examiner.

Sources described the shooting in south-west Dublin as “clumsy” and “reckless” and said the gunman fled over walls, before escaping in a car.

Detectives suspect that the nature of the attack might suggest a “grudge” of some sort, but said it was “too early” to rule out other possibilities.

The man entered the gates of the yard, just off what is a busy road to Tallaght, brandishing a shotgun.

“The guy comes in clumsily, like something from the OK Corral [wild west gunfight] and fires two shots,” one source told the Irish Examiner.

“This was real rough and ready,” said a Garda source. “If you use a shotgun, you are not talking about a marksman.

“If you fire in the direction of a number of people you could hit anyone. It’s reckless. Thankfully, no one is dead.”

Sources said they will interview everyone in the yard as well as other staff to see if they know of any possible motive for the attack.

The injured man, aged 41, was taken to Tallaght Hospital and was described as being in a serious condition.

Earlier: Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a shooting incident in Dublin yesterday.

A man in his 40s was hospitalised after being shot in Walkinstown just after 11.30am in the morning.

The injured man remains in Tallaght hospital, where his condition is described as serious.

Gardaí investigating the incident that happened at a premises on Greenhills Road in Walkinstown yesterday are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Investigating officers are appealing to anybody who may have been in the Greenhills Rd area of Walkinstown between 11am and 1pm yesterday, and saw or noted the movements of a Seat Ibiza with Registration Number 97-D-44770.

The car was later located on Corrig Close a short distance from the scene of the shooting.

It is believed that there are two man suspects involved, the first man is described as tall and wearing a grey tracksuit, there is no description of the second man who was driving the car.

Gardaí are asking anyone who has any information to contact to contact them at Crumlin Garda Station.
