The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is facing into a week of discussions today with potential partners in the next coalition Government.
Fianna Fáil had a hugely successful election, winning 78 seats to leave Mr Ahern almost certain to secure another five years in power.
Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny is refusing to give up on the possibility of leading a coalition, but he would need the support of virtually every TD except those from Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin.
Yesterday, the Taoiseach said his preference would be a coalition with the PDs and like-minded independents, but he is also expected to hold talks with Labour and the Greens.
Both he and Pat Rabbitte say a Fianna Fáil-Labour coalition is unlikely, but the Greens have expressed a desire to go into Government if they feel their policies can be implemented.
