Irish consular staff in Poland have dealt with only nine arrests since the Euro 2012 tournament kicked off, they said today.

Twenty fans have had to receive emergency travel documents after passports were lost or stolen in the first week of the competition.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs based in Poland until early next week said many more passports had been reported missing but subsequently turned up.

Of the arrests, eight took place in Poznan for drunk and disorderly behaviour, including nudity, and two for vandalism and damage to property.

At least five fans ended up in the so-called drunk tank where they are forced to sober up with medics on hand to check conditions and fines are handed out upon release.

One man was detained in Gdansk last night after the Spain game, the only football fan arrested in the city.

Elsewhere, one driving licence was reported stolen and four people have been hospitalised for minor injuries, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
