Harrington sweats on second place as rain stops play

Irish golfer Padraig Harrington has to wait another day to discover if he is to earn second-place finish in the Booz Allen Classic.

Irish golfer Padraig Harrington has to wait another day to discover if he is to earn second-place finish in the Booz Allen Classic.

The US Tour’s rain-hit tournament will go into a second extra day today with runaway leader Ben Curtis due to seal his first victory since the 2003 Open. He is seven strokes clear with only two holes to complete.

Harrington just had enough time before play was suspended again to finish a last-round 66 that left him tied in the clubhouse lead with Billy Andrade, while Steve Stricker and Nik O’Hern were also 15 under out on the course.

The delay had the knock-on effect of forcing a 24-hour postponement of the Open championship qualifier at the nearby Congressional club in Washington.

That has now been reduced from 36 holes to 18 holes and scheduled for later tomorrow, with the field split in half to compete for six places on each of two courses.

If they cannot play those spots will be given to the highest-ranked players in the field – and that would get Lee Westwood and Greg Owen into the starting line-up for Hoylake next month providing they do not withdraw from the qualifying event before the decision is taken.
