Cullen says no to big fares hike

Minister for Transport Martin Cullen has turned down a CIÉ request for an 8% increase in fares at the group’s three companies, it emerged tonight.

Minister for Transport Martin Cullen has turned down a CIÉ request for an 8% increase in fares at the group’s three companies, it emerged tonight.

Mr Cullen said he carried out a detailed examination of the application from Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann and had decided that an increase of 3.5% in fares was more appropriate as it was more in line with inflation.

In reaching the decision, the Minister said he was conscious of the requirement to achieve a balance of the impact on the customers of CIÉ with the need to sustain the financial health of the three companies.

It is understood that Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann will outline their new fares structure at a later date.
