Gwyneth and Jude wow fans at premiere

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow star Gwyneth Paltrow tonight delighted fans by attending her first London premiere since the birth of her baby daughter.

She was joined by co-star Jude Law – who in turn was supported by his ex-wife Sadie Frost – at the event in London’s Leicester Square.

Paltrow plays an intrepid reporter who joins forces with her ex-boyfriend (Law) to save the world from a mad scientist.

As reporter Polly Perkins and pilot Joe “Sky Captain” Sullivan, the pair fight giant robots in the fantasy adventure.

The £38 million film also stars Angelina Jolie, who was not at tonight’s premiere, as feisty eye-patch wearing fighter pilot Franky Cook, and Irish actor Sir Michael Gambon as Polly’s editor.

Set in 1930’s New York, the sci-fi thriller was made without sets or location.

Actors were filmed in front of a blue screen and the background and other images were added later with computer graphics.

Tonight Law, 31, said: “At first it was tricky and it was difficult to keep a straight face then we got used to it.”

Paltrow, who celebrates her 32nd birthday tomorrow, said: “It’s a difficult technique but it was actually fun. You’ve just got to use your imagination.”

The actress – who yesterday received flowers from Law for her birthday – gave birth to daughter Apple, with Coldplay front man Chris Martin in May this year.

She famously said that she wanted to put her career on the back burner, saying it would be difficult to be a working mother.

Tonight the star, who looked stunning in a pink strapless Vivienne Westwood dress and black Christian Louboutin heels, said she was enjoying motherhood.

She said: “I’m spending as much time as possible with Apple, carrying her around, singing to her, all kinds of things.”

Asked what advice she had for British mums-to-be, the Shakespeare In Love actress joked: “Go for the epidural.”

She added that Sky Captain would be one of the first films she would like to show her daughter.

Asked what future invention she would like to see, she said: “Efficient fuel instead of this oil nonsense which harms the planet.”

Law, who was wearing a Christian Dior jacket and matching trousers, said: “The chance to go to space.”

Sky Captain was co-produced by Law’s ex-wife Frost, who tonight wore a black vintage dress with a lace back.

The two are now on friendly terms and Law was in the audience for her Frost French fashion show last week.

His current girlfriend Sienna Miller, 22, did not join her boyfriend on the red carpet tonight.

Frost said: “I haven’t seen Gwyneth since she had her baby so it will be great to catch up. I wanted Jude in the film and he has a great chemistry with Gwyneth. I’m glad that we got him.”

The surprise star of the film is said to be legend Laurence Olivier. Fifteen years after his death, old footage and computer wizardry resurrect him as villain Dr Totenkopf.

Stella McCartney designed the costumes for the movie sci-fi spectacular.

The film opens in the UK on October 1.
