Pat Flanagan will have to see off two other candidates if he is to remain in charge of the Westmeath senior football team.
A special meeting of the Westmeath Football Board in Cusack Park last night saw incumbent boss Flanagan, Des Dolan senior and Finbar Egan all nominated for the senior and Under-21 manager's position by clubs.
The trio will be interviewed in the coming days with a decision on the manager, whether Flanagan continues for a third season or a new approach is sought, made by next Wednesday.
The interview process will be handled by a five-man committee consisting of two County Board representatives, two members of the Football Board and a club representative.
They will report back their findings and give their recommendation for manager at a meeting next Wednesday night.
Clara man Flanagan, whose tenure was due for an annual review, remains the favourite for the role.
He helped midlanders retain their Division 2 status in this year's Allianz League and they almost pulled off a shock win over Kerry in the All-Ireland qualifiers.
Dolan senior, father of star forward Dessie who focused on playing for Garrycastle this year rather than the county side, has managed Leitrim and Longford in the past as well as a number of club teams.
Egan, meanwhile, has been proposed for the role after guiding Maryland to county intermediate, senior 'B' and Under-21 titles in recent seasons. He also had All-Ireland success with the Mayo ladies in the
1990s.
