Germany’s Bernhard Langer has withdrawn from the Deutsche Bank Players’ Championship after undergoing a kidney operation today.
Langer was taken to hospital in Hamburg early on Wednesday morning suffering from a kidney stone and surgeons operated to repair the lining of his kidney.
The former Ryder Cup captain, who turns 50 next month, is expected to have another operation next week to actually remove the stone.
Langer is hopeful of returning to action at the KLM Open in Zandvoort from August 23-26 where his teenage son Stefan is also in the field.
Stefan caddied for his father as he partnered Marcel Siem to victory in the World Cup in Barbados last December, 16 years after winning the same event, and despite being on the verge of eligibility for the Seniors Tour, Langer remains competitive on the regular tour on both sides of the Atlantic.
Earlier this year he narrowly missed out on his first regular US Tour victory since 1985 in the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, losing a sudden-death play-off to Rory Sabbatini.
And last month he overcame a neck injury which almost forced him to pull out during his first round 76 to finish joint second behind Sweden’s Niclas Fasth in the BMW International Open in Munich.
