A second candidate has put his name forward to challenge David Trimble for the leadership of the Ulster Unionist Party this Saturday.

Robert Oliver, the treasurer of Mr Trimble’s own constituency organisation in Upper Bann, has insisted that his candidacy for the leadership is serious.

He said he was seeking the leadership because Mr Trimble had failed to deliver stable devolution or unity within the UUP.

Mr Oliver is a prominent supporter of the Orange Order and owns an electrical business in Portadown, Co Armagh.

Last week, David Hoey, a management consultant and Apprentice Boy from Coleraine, Co Derry, also announced his intention to challenge Mr Trimble’s leadership at the UUP AGM on Saturday.

He said he would stand aside in favour of a new leadership team if he managed to oust Mr Trimble from the position.
