PSV Eindhoven defender Alex could be out for the rest of the season.
The giant Brazilian centre-back, who could be a Chelsea player next season after the club revealed they have an option to sign him at the end of the campaign, appeared to tear his hamstring in the goalless draw with Excelsior on Sunday.
The Eredivisie leaders are awaiting an MRI scan to clarify the situation but it could be good news for Liverpool, who have been drawn to face PSV in the Champions League quarter-final.
“When he wanted to kick the ball he felt something snap in his leg,” said coach Ronald Koeman.
“We must wait, but we think that he tore a muscle. If that is the case you would be happy if he can play another game this season.”
Alex scored against Arsenal as the Dutch side knocked out Arsene Wenger’s men in the previous round of the competition and later claimed it could help him join the Blues, who he believes already own him.
