Taoiseach Enda Kenny has called on some former politicians, including some of his predecessors, to "reflect" on the pensions they are receiving.
It was revealed last week that millions are being paid to former politicians, some of whom were at the helm when the economic crisis started.
Mr Kenny said that it may not be legally possible to take the money off them, but some should consider the money they take.
"Obviously some of these pensions have been quite enormous, and those who receive them, I suppose, if they reflect on the value of their work and the consequences of that, maybe they should consider that," he said.
"I don’t have an answer to your question as to whether it’s legally possible for this Government to actually alter those."
