The Government is set to establish an inquiry before the end of this week into the awarding of a lucrative PR contract it was reported today.

Minister for Transport Martin Cullen awarded the contract to Monica Leech shortly after he was appointed Minister for Environment in 2002.

Nobody else was allowed to tender for the contract, under which Ms Leech is paid €800-a-day.

Reports this morning said the Government was planning to appoint a former civil servant to investigate the circumstances of the award.
