Gardaí in Limerick have appealed for information about two burned out cars found after the shooting of well known criminal Christy Keane in Limerick this morning.

Christy Keane was in a critical condition in hospital after two masked and armed men ambushed him as he parked his car near the sports centre in the University of Limerick.

The 54-year-old tried to run away but was shot several times, gardaí said. The attack took place at about 6.50am in the Castletroy area of the city.

It is understood the gunmen escaped in a car which was set on fire a short distance away in the Monaleen area of the city.

Christy Keane has served a 10-year prison sentence for cannabis offences while his brother Kieran was murdered in a bloody feud involving drugs gangs in Limerick in the 2000s.

Then scene of the attack was sealed off for technical analysis by gardai.

University of Limerick remained open following the attack but the campus is not as busy as other times of the year due to the summer break.

UL said the normal business of the college would carry on despite the attempted murder.

“Gardai are investigating an incident that took place early this morning in the car park of the University Arena. The University is co-operating fully with the investigation,” a spokeswoman said.

“All university facilities are open and functioning as normal, including the University Arena.”
