Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale has insisted he is in favour of offering Lee Bowyer a new contract.
Ridsdale caused something of a stir when admitting, in light of recent events, he would not try to sign the controversial midfielder if he had been put up for sale by another club.
However, he stated: ‘‘Lee Bowyer was found not guilty of all charges in court.
‘‘As a player who has 18 months on his contract, it makes sense to negotiate a new one, given the ramifications of the Bosman ruling.’’
United boss David O’Leary had already declared his desire to keep Bowyer at Elland Road.
He said: ‘‘Do I want him to stay and sign a new contract? Yes. And if there is anything about him, he will.’’
