The Taoiseach has said the Government's new dementia plan will allow those affected to be treated in their own home with dignity and respect.
€27.5m will be spent on the strategy between now and 2017, with the funds going towards “intensive” home supports, more resources for local GPs and raising awareness of dementia and its stigma.
Some 50,000 people in Ireland are living with dementia.
Enda Kenny said the strategy would allow those affected by dementia to remain in their own homes.
"When you speak to the person, home is where they want to be," he said. "How many times have we heard of people who have come home from hospital to die because they want to be in their own place?"
He added: "This is a bittertsweet time of year for those who care for parents, partners and spouses affected by dementia."
