Gardaí investigating the death of a man in a fight outside a pub in Cork city have started examining CCTV footage in a bid to try and identify the culprits.

Officers have secured CCTV footage from a number of premises in the Ballyphehane area as part of their investigation into the death of the 51-year-old man.

A full murder inquiry is expected to be launched after the post mortem is concluded.

The dead man, who was living in Mahon, was one of a group of men that confronted another group in the Manhattan Bar on Lower Friar's Walk in Ballyphehane at around 12.30am.

It is understood that up to 20 people - some using baseball bats and other implements - were involved in the row at one point.

Gardaí say a row broke out inside a pub on Lower Friar's Walk in Ballyphehane sometime after midnight. It continued onto the street outside, where the 51-year-old victim received serious injuries.

He was rushed to Cork University Hospital by car, but was pronounced dead in the early hours of this morning.

Two other people - an 18 year old man and a woman in her twenties - were also hurt during the incident, and were taken to hospital - but their injuries were not life-threatening.

Two men were arrested for public order offences, but have subsequently been released from custody.

Gardaí are appealing for people with information to contact Togher garda station on 021 4947120.
