The St Paul's Carnival in Bristol normally attracts about 40,000 visitors for a street parade followed by 12 hours of live music and street performances.

Police say a 26-year-old man from Birmingham was shot in the arm and leg with a nail gun in Denbigh Street shortly after midnight.

A short while later a man was attacked in Grosvenor Road with a machete, after a musical instrument was stolen. He sustained head injuries.

Just after 12.30am a 22-year-old man from London was shot in the thigh after he and his friends got into an argument with a group from the West Midlands in Ashley Road.

At 2am, a man in his twenties from Tottenham, north London, was shot in the left thigh with a handgun after a row. Four men from Birmingham were arrested in connection with the incident in Grosvenor Road, outside the Inkerman Pub.

A 23-year-old woman was shot at close range in the abdomen at 3.45am, also in Grosvenor Road, outside the Black and White Cafe. She was taken to the Bristol Royal Infirmary where her condition is said to be serious but stable.

And just before 6.30am police received reports that two gangs were shooting at each other in Heron Road. No-one is believed to have been injured.

Three men, two from Bristol and one from London, and a local woman were arrested in connection with the incident.

A police spokesman said: "There was a good community spirit throughout the day but it does appear that a minority were intent on spoiling the evening."
