Team manager Nick Fry insists Honda’s new-look car to promote environmental awareness is not a publicity stunt.
The RA107s driven by Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello next season will feature an image of the Earth rather than sponsors’ logos, with the aim of raising awareness among Formula One’s global audience.
Pop mogul Simon Fuller and his company 19 contributed to planning the initiative but Fry insists breaking from tradition is not a gimmick and won't mean Honda losing sponsors.
“We knew from research that 94% of people thought it was a good idea. There are always going to be the remaining cynics but we have no time for that,” said Fry.
“The case for climate change is well proven. One individual or nation will not solve the problem and this call to action is for everyone to make a positive move rather than waiting for the inevitable.”
Button and Barrichello, for their part, have vowed to make lifestyle changes to become more environmentally friendly, and they also drive fuel-efficient Honda Hybrid cars when away from the track.
