The Government has been accused of putting children's lives at risk by failing to implement special speed limits outside schools.

The Government has been accused of putting children's lives at risk by failing to implement special speed limits outside schools.

Fine Gael TD Denis Naughten has claimed local authorities are unable to introduce the new limits because they have not been issued with guidelines from the Department of Transport.

According to Deputy Naughten specific guidelines regarding the design of the signs that are to be erected outside schools were due to be published last January.

He has described the situation as “appalling” and has accused the Minister for Transport Martin Cullen of not knowing what is going on within his department.
