EU says vehicle registration tax is "unfair"

Irish car buyers are being charged up to €8,000 more than other Europeans for the 10 leading models.

Irish car buyers are being charged up to €8,000 more than other Europeans for the 10 leading models.

A study shows that vehicle registration tax can add an extra €3,000 to the price of cars here.

The study shows that Irish car buyers pay the most in Europe for five of the most popular vehicles.

We’re the second dearest for the other five top models.

The Toyota Corolla is the top selling car here and the 1.4 litre version costs over €21,000.

The same car can be bought for less than €15,000 in Germany, Italy and Spain.

Motorist representative groups are blaming vehicle registration tax for what they say are extortionate car prices.

There’s already been calls for the tax to be abolished and the EU has branded it “unfair”.
