Ewan McGregor showed today that he is no match for the Dark Side at a charity premiere of Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones.
The Scottish actor, who plays Jedi knight Obi-Wan Kenobi as a young man in the eagerly anticipated film, was overshadowed by Kenobi’s arch-enemy Darth Vader at last night’s Los Angeles screening.
But McGregor can breathe a sigh of relief as Vader himself does not appear in this instalment of the space saga, which is a ‘‘prequel’’ to the original three movies.
Instead the film concentrates on a character called Anakin Skywalker, played by Hayden Christensen, who eventually turns evil to become Darth Vader.
In the original Star Wars film, which is set later in the chronology of the series, Vader kills an older Obi-Wan, played by Sir Alec Guinness.
Yesterday’s charity premiere was held in aid of a fund which provides scholarships for students in LA.
Tickets for UK screenings of the latest episode in director George Lucas’s epic series, which opens this Thursday, have already been selling thick and fast.
