Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has announced the appointment of a new political director, who will lead an executive team within the party and inform the front bench.

45-year-old Gerry Naughten is coming to the post from the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Mr Kenny says the appointment was one of the key recommendations in the party's strategic review.

He said: ''We will have a new approach that will connect the political activity of the party with the membership and constituency organisation.''

A further appointment of a new Director Of Communications will be made shortly.

Mr Naughten is expected to take up his post in January.
