Wales were launching their RBS 6 Nations campaign against Italy in Rome today looking for their first victory in the tournament opener since 1997.
The Welsh ran out at the sun-kissed Stadio Flaminio showing six changes to the side beaten by New Zealand in their final autumn International last November.
The injuries to outside-halves Stephen Jones and Neil Jenkins meant another chance for Cardiff’s Iestyn Harris to show that he can successfully make the switch from league to union.
The former Leeds Rhino was one of only two survivors – the other was clubmate Martyn Williams – from Wales’ Six Nations opener against Ireland last season when their record defeat in Dublin heralded the departure of coach Graham Henry.
Italy were looking to record only their second win in 16 matches in the tournament having suffered 14 successive defeats since beating Scotland on their debut in 2000.
But the Azzurri were boosted by the presence of outside-half Diego Dominguez who originally said he would not play in the competition this season before having a change of heart.
The 36-year-old veteran was winning his 73rd cap and looking to add to his test points tally of 965 which leaves him second on the all-time standings to Welshman Jenkins.
Italy coach John Kirwan had also sprung a surprise by switching flanker Mauro Bergamasco to right wing after he impressed during a warm-up game.
