Wenger warns PSV could feel Gunners' wrath

Arsene Wenger has warned PSV Eindhoven that Arsenal will use the taunts of midfielder Phillip Cocu as added motivation ahead of tonight’s pivotal Champions League tie.

Cocu risked the wrath of the Arsenal players with his outspoken comments on the eve of the match.

He declared: “I watched the last few Arsenal games on television and there is no doubt that they are going thorough a serious crisis in their game, in spite of the great list of players they have.

“If we play with the same concentration as we have in the last couple of games, it will be almost impossible for them to surprise us.“

Cocu also told the Evening Standard: “Henry is not playing as he has during other seasons. I don’t think he is as cool as before and if he is marked well, it will be difficult for him to escape. He would be blamed a lot for Arsenal’s lack of goals.“

Wenger nevertheless believes that Henry, who has scored a "mere" 13 times so far this season, with eight Premiership assists, and his team-mates will be fired into action by Cocu’s criticism.

“It will certainly help Thierry Henry and the rest of the team to get motivated,” he said. “In our job, you can only give one response and that’s out on the pitch. That’s what we will try to do.”

Wenger’s key selection decision rests on whether Sol Campbell can last the full game after recovering from a calf injury and a stomach upset.

“Physically, I think he’s ready but ideally I would have waited a bit longer. If he can last for 90 minutes, I will play him but I’m not yet sure,” he admitted.

Dennis Bergkamp, who does not fly, has not made the overland trip due to an Achilles problem, while Edu and Gilberto Silva are still ruled out.

Wenger, who will defend himself at a personal hearing against his FA charge for comments about Ruud van Nistelrooy, also spoke out against taking the players off if there is any racist abuse tonight.

PSV were fined two years ago after missiles and racist abuse were directed at Henry, but the Dutch club have pledged that the problem with a small minority of fans has been dealt with.

Referee Herbert Fandel insisted that removing the players would be a “last resort” if there were further problems in the wake of last week’s racist abuse of England players in Spain.

However, Wenger added: “The referee is the boss and we always do what he says, but I still think it’s wrong.

“I hope there will be no trouble at all, but if you say to people that you will cancel the game if they create trouble, maybe some will try to do that. That’s the danger.”
