Strachan: Lennon fit for action

Celtic boss Gordon Strachan has launched a defence of his captain Neil Lennon after the midfielder’s physique was subject to ridicule by Graeme Souness.

Celtic boss Gordon Strachan has launched a defence of his captain Neil Lennon after the midfielder’s physique was subject to ridicule by Graeme Souness.

The former Rangers manager was a studio pundit during television coverage of Celtic’s Champions League tie with Milan on Wednesday and, along with Holland legend Ruud Gullit, laughed when midfielder Lennon took his shirt off at the end of the match – which the Parkhead side lost 1-0 after extra-time.

The clip has been doing the rounds on the internet and the former Northern Ireland skipper is almost certain to be targeted by Rangers fans at Sunday’s Old Firm derby at Celtic Park.

Strachan hit back at his former Scotland team-mate last night before hinting that he could offer the Irishman another extension to his contract at the end of the season.

He said: “Some of us have an unfortunate physique and some of us are statuesque like Graeme.

“But it doesn’t change what you are inside. Neil and I talk every day and I need his experience.

“We’re two focused people and all of this talk about whether or not his contract will be renewed by Celtic is a side issue for us.

“Some players couldn’t handle being out of contract while trying to negotiate the end to the championship, but he can. And that’s what makes Neil the player he is.”

Meanwhile, striker Kenny Miller insists he is as happy with the quality as much as the quantity of his goals this season.

Miller was axed for the game in the San Siro having only scored eight times since arriving from Wolves in the summer.

However, the former Rangers man, who opened his Parkhead account in the very first Old Firm derby win in September, believes the goals he has scored are more important than hitting the 20-goal ratio.

He said: “I would much rather score a goal against Rangers than score when we are three or four up.

“It is good to get important goals whether it be in the Champions League or against Rangers or in a cup final. I would love to have 20-odd goals at the end of the season but if you look back at the important goals I have scored I can take some consolation from that.

“When it come to the Champions League I have managed to get three goals and I’ve got that goal against Rangers. And I have scored winners against Inverness and Kilmarnock as well.”
