Britain has announced its largest military deployment since the Gulf War, with 1,700 front-line troops being sent to join the ongoing war in Afghanistan.

The move was announced by Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon today.

He said the force will be ready for action within weeks and will join a US-led brigade on the ground.

Some of the troops are apparently already on board warships in the region, while others are still completing their training.
