The ASTI has said that 90% of newly qualified teachers fail to get a full-time, permanent contract.

The union, which yesterday rejected the Croke Park deal on pay-and-reform in the public sector, is holding a conference for young teachers today in Dublin's Gresham Hotel.

It will outline a strategy for developing a sustainable and quality teaching profession in the future.

General Secretary John White said part time and temporary contracts are "not the right introduction for young teachers into the teaching profession".
