The SDLP tonight called for the speedy implementation of all-Ireland policing structures.
Alban Maginness said the party’s revised document on all-Ireland justice issues outlined a “radical agenda for the future development of policing on the island“.
The North Belfast MLA said: “The proposals would bring about the integration of law and practice on the island, common enforcement across the island of the criminal law and protection for the vulnerable and would see benefits for all the citizens of the island.
“The SDLP proposals attempt to map out the development of the island in a way that threatens no one but brings advantage to all.”
The SDLP proposals, which have already been tabled with the Irish and British governments outline a number of plans, including the fast forwarding of all Patten proposals for all-Ireland policing, an all-Ireland Law Reform Commission and the harmonisation of civil and criminal laws.
An all-Ireland Charter of Rights, the placing of garda officers at senior posts in the Police Service of Northern Ireland and a common programme of work between the Criminal Asset Bureau North and South are also included.
Mr Maginness said: “These proposals go to the heart of the future integration of the island of Ireland and create opportunities for all our citizens.
“While some complain about north-south structures, the commercial, farming and voluntary sectors all recognise the benefits of the all-Island conduct of affairs.
“These proposals recognise this momentum and move future policing and justice issues on to a new level. They can create an agreed impetus to develop the rights, freedoms and protections for the citizens of the island.”
