Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy has agreed to drop his plans to restrict the public's access to personal records held by the Government.

The One in Four group had severely criticised Mr McCreevy for attempting to introduce measures that would only allow individuals to access files which contained that person's name.

At present, individuals can access all files that relate to them personally, regardless of whether they are named in those documents.

One in Four said personal records are crucial to abuse victims attempting to build up cases against their abusers.
