Marcus Tregoning is delighted with his Ladbrokes St Leger contender Aqaleem as he works towards what the trainer hopes will be a shot at the world’s oldest Classic.
The Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned colt ran a huge race to chase home Authorized and Eagle Mountain in the Vodafone Derby, with connections opting to swerve the Irish equivalent to prepare him for Doncaster in September.
“The plan is to run him in the Gordon Stakes (July 31), that’s his next target. I want to send as strong a team as I can to Goodwood, because it is a wonderful meeting and I like to support it,” Tregoning said.
“He’s only just started back in his work, we gave him a holiday after the Derby and decided not to go to Ireland, and I’m delighted we didn’t.
“He’s coming along steadily and he’ll be stepping up the pace soon,” the Lambourn trainer told At The Races.
The son of Sinndar is the general 5-1 second favourite for the Leger behind runaway Irish Derby victor Soldier Of Fortune.
