Gunners held scoreless by Everton in first half

Everton came closest to a first-half goal when Lee Carsley hit the bar from long range, but it was Arsenal on top at the break.

Carsley’s effort came on 25 minutes, but only fine goalkeeping from Tim Howard - who blocked one close range effort from Tomas Rosicky with his legs – kept Everton on level terms.

With Liverpool only drawing at Aston Villa earlier in the day, Arsenal knew they could take control of third place in the Barclays Premiership with a win on Merseyside.
