Portsmouth striker Kanu could be off Down Under in the summer, according to his agent.

Samuel Okoronkwo, the Nigerian’s legal representative, claims Australian club Gold Coast Galaxy are keen to make Kanu their star player.

The newly-formed team, who are believed to have close ties to David Beckham’s club Los Angeles Galaxy, are waiting to be given a licence to join the Australian A-League.

Okoronkwo said: “Kanu wants to play football and we would discuss Australia if things were not to work out with Portsmouth.”

The 31-year-old stalled for time over the offer of a new one-year contract at Fratton Park in the summer before finally settling for a deal that triggered an automatic one-year extension after 20 appearances this season.

Now back from the African Nations Cup, where he was put out of action by a knee injury in the opening match, he has already clocked up 18 first-team appearances but only nine in the starting line-up.

He is training with Pompey on their four-day break in Spain after making his comeback as a substitute in the 1-0 win at Bolton last Saturday.

Meanwhile, defender Noe Pamarot has been ruled out of Portsmouth’s fifth-round FA Cup trip to Preston on Sunday with damaged knee ligaments.

The former Tottenham player was injured after only 27 minutes at Bolton and will be out for “several weeks” according to Pompey physio Gary Sadler.

It is a chance for French loanee Lucien Aubey, who came on for Pamarot at the Reebok, to make his full Pompey debut having arrived in the January transfer window from Lens for the rest of the season.

Centre-back Sylvain Distin is set to return after two games out with a hamstring injury while striker David Nugent, recovering from a hernia operation, could replace cup-tied new signing Jermain Defoe against the club that sold him to Portsmouth for £6m in the summer.
