Japan's Shigeki Maruyama and England's Justin Rose lead the Open at Muirfield and are a shot ahead of Ireland's Des Smyth.
Maruyama and Rose lie on four under with at the turn, while Smyth is in the clubhouse on three under.
Rose birdied the second and third holes and then carded a fine eagle at the par five ninth.
Playing partner and world number one Tiger Woods, who is bidding for the third leg of the Grand Slam, had a nervous start and currently lies on one under at the turn.
Meanwhile, defending champion David Duval had bogeyed the first after finding a similar place to Woods off the tee, but hit a superb approach to three feet for a birdie on the fourth to get back to level par.
