Soccer: Beckham stays on as England captain - Eriksson

Sven-Goran Eriksson has promised David Beckham will retain his England skipper's role during the World Cup.

Sven-Goran Eriksson has promised David Beckham will retain his England skipper's role during the World Cup.

Eriksson was strongly tipped to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, but he claims he has no intention of quitting the national side.

And he will not be dumping Beckham after his recent poor form.

Ferguson left Beckham on the bench for the Premiership defeat by West Ham, and the Champions League tie with Boavista last Wednesday, claiming he was suffering from a niggling back problem and needed a rest.

Concern has been expressed about Beckham's recent performances, but Eriksson remains unconcerned and has offered his reassurance that the Londoner will lead England into their opening game against Sweden on June 2.

"As a captain I am very pleased with him. He is playing well and I have no reason to change it."
