A Junior Government Minister has said he is confident the Government will be able to find savings of €3.5bn in December's budget without having to break commitments made in its Programme for Government.
Joe Costello's comments come after a Government document to the Troika revealed that the Coalition plans to introduce a raft of tax increases in next year's budget.
These include plans to increase motor tax, excise duty on cigarettes and alcohol and to widen the income tax net.
Fianna Fáil has accused the Government of reneging on its promises not to increase income tax, but Junior Minister Joe Costello said these are just proposals and he is confident it will not come to that.
