Heavy rains and high winds have been reported throughout Ireland this morning, with 60mph winds on the east coast and 80mph on the west and south-west coasts.

The ESB has put around 300 engineers on standby in case of power cuts, but no serious problems have been reported so far.

Some roads in the south-west have been blocked by flood waters and fallen trees, while motorists in Co Donegal have been advised to take care.

Thousands of homes in the North were also left without power after strong winds cut the electricity supply in many areas.
