Gardaí in Limerick say they are satisfied with the level of resources and support available to them in their fight to tackle the city's gangland crime.
A statement to that effect came after five men from the city were sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday, for the murder last January of 36-year-old Kieran Keane.
A unanimous guilty verdict was delivered against Desmond Dundon (aged 20) of Hyde Road, Limerick; David "Frogs Eyes" Stanners (aged 31) of Pineview Gardens, Moyross; James McCarthy (aged 24) of Delmege Park, Moyross; Christopher "Smokie" Costelloe (aged 20) of Moylish Avenue, Ballynanty Beg and Anthony "Noddy" McCarthy (aged 21) of Fairgreen, Garryowen.
The five were also found guilty of the attempted murder of Keane's nephew Owen Treacy (aged 31) of Munchin's Street, St Mary's Park, Limerick, who was stabbed 17 times.
Superintendent Gerry Mahon, who led the investigation into Kieran Keane's murder, said he was confident that Limerick gardaí would continue to receive sufficient support in their work.
"The Commissioner of the Garda Síochána has provided both myself and Chief Superintendent Kelly with all resources that we need, or that we feel we need.
"They have done so consistently over the years and I'm sure that those resources will be available to me and to Chief Superintendent Kelly in any future time to come."
