Taoiseach ‘afraid’ to debate US use of Shannon

The Irish Anti-War Movement (IAWM) has said the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is afraid to hold a Dail debate on the use of Shannon Airport by the US military because he knows he has sold out Irish neutrality.

The Irish Anti-War Movement has said the Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is afraid to hold a Dail debate on the use of Shannon Airport by the US military because he knows he has sold out Irish neutrality.

Speaking at a press conference today, John Gormley, the chairman of the Green Party and a member of the IAWM, said: “It is completely undemocratic to allow our airports to be used by American forces for an attack on innocent Iraqi women and children without first debating it in the Dail.

"Even other parliaments that are going to be directly partaking [in a war against Iraq] have debated it and I don’t see what the problem is. I think Bertie Ahern is running away from the issue because he knows he has sold out Irish neutrality.”
