The SDLP has called on the British government to introduce tougher sentences for crimes motivated by sectarianism and hatred in the North.

The SDLP has called on the British government to introduce tougher sentences for crimes motivated by sectarianism and hatred in the North.

The increased sentences form part of a new sectarian crimes act proposed by the nationalist party today.

The SDLP said the act would also ban marching bands that promote hate speech or use paramilitary symbols, outlaw sectarian chants at football games and oblige all public authorities to remove all sectarian symbols from their buildings, including Union flags.

Party leader Mark Durkan said: "The Secretary of State has already announced tougher penalties for hate crimes. That is welcome, but not nearly enough. We need to outlaw the sectarianism on our kerbstones and lamp posts."
