Robert Duvall, who stars with Kevin Costner in the Costner-directed Western Open Range, nearly didn’t make it to the set.
While preparing for the film he was bucked off his horse and broke six ribs.
His injuries were still healing when filming began and it was a psychological challenge for him to get back in the saddle, he said.
“I was a little hesitant to get back on a horse,” Duvall told journalists in Los Angeles. “But the wranglers were very helpful and after a while I got in the groove of it and it was fine.
“It was tough but I knew I wanted to do the film so I knew I had to recuperate.”
He and Costner play “freegrazers”- cowboys who roam the countryside with their cattle living off the land – in the film, which also stars Annette Bening and Michael Gambon.
