'Secret wedding' for actress Christie

Julie Christie has secretly married at a private ceremony in India, it was reported today.

The Oscar hopeful, 66, has spent years shunning marriage, saying it did not fit in with her beliefs.

She has been with her long-term partner, journalist Duncan Campbell, for 28 years.

Her brother, Clive Christie, a retired university lecturer, confirmed that the wedding took place, according to the Daily Mail newspaper, adding: “We didn’t have any involvement.”

It is not known whether the ceremony was in a registry office, which would make it recognised in Britain.

The actress has said of marriage in the past: “I don’t see any reason for getting married unless you're religious, which I’m not.”

Christie, who avoids the limelight and divides her time between a Welsh farmhouse and a flat in east London, has been nominated for the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of an Alzheimer’s sufferer in 'Away From Her'.

The film portrays a seemingly happy marriage whose foundations come into serious question as the Alzheimer’s takes hold.

Christie has already won the Screen Actors’ Guild Award for best actress for the role.

The 'Doctor Zhivago' star won her first Oscar for the John Schlesinger film 'Darling', before turning her back on Hollywood in the 1970s.

Christie’s agent was unavailable for comment.
