Bayerns Luca day

Luca Toni’s last-minute header gave Bayern Munich a dramatic away-goals victory over brave 10-man Getafe in their UEFA Cup quarter-final second-leg encounter.

The game ended 3-3 on the night and 4-4 overall as Toni stuck twice in the last six minutes of extra-time to seal an epic victory for the German outfit, who were heading out of the competition in normal time before Franck Ribery popped up in the last minute to cancel Cosmin Contra’s opener.

Getafe had been reduced to 10 men as early as the sixth minute when Ruben De la Red was dismissed, but the hosts put on a superb display and goals from Francisco Javier Casquero and Braulio in extra-time appeared to have sealed the win before Toni scored with his dramatic late brace.

A virtuoso performance by Adrian Mutu inspired Fiorentina past PSV Eindhoven and into the last four.

Former Chelsea striker Mutu struck either side of half-time, his opener a stunning 30-yard strike, as the Italians dominated at the Philips Stadion to earn a 3-1 aggregate success and book a meeting with Rangers in the last four.

The hosts could have kept themselves in contention with 10 minutes remaining but Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastien Frey saved Timmy Simons’ spot-kick.

The hosts needed only to keep a clean sheet following a 1-1 draw in the first leg, but it was the Italians who carried the momentum on the night.

In the remaining fixture Zenit St Petersburg progressed despite defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of the tie in Russia.

Dmitri Bulykin made the most of a rare start to score the only goal of the game but it was nowhere near enough to overturn Zenit’s 4-1 advantage from the first leg.

Leverkusen knew they had a mountain to climb after last week’s demolition and began the game brightly but there was not enough clinical play in the final third after Bulykin headed home a Gonzalo Castro cross in the 18th minute.

Anatoliy Tymoschuk had a chance to level from the spot with six minutes left after Pavel Pogrebnyak was fouled in the penalty area by Karim Haggui, but the Zenit forward’s shot was not strong enough to beat Adler.
