A post mortem of a woman's body found in the Grand Canal in Laois yesterday has been completed, with initial results indicating she died of drowning.

A post mortem of a woman's body found in the Grand Canal in Laois yesterday has been completed, with initial results indicating she died of drowning.

Her body was taken from the water near Vicarstown shortly after 7pm.

A man, who was found nearby, was taken to Portlaoise Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.

Investigating gardaí are appealing to anyone who travelled along the canal roadway between Vicarstown and Athy between 6.30pm and 7pm to contact them.

Superintendent Philips Lyons says they are particularly interested in speaking with the driver of a dark coloured SUV-type vehicle.
